Abstract

Currently, paracetamol is one of the analgesic and antipyretic drugs most consumed by society, due to the exemption of medical prescription and low cost, enabling greater ease of purchase. The present report describes a case of paracetamol poisoning with progression to liver failure and the need for liver transplantation. The case described was that of a thirteen-year-old teenager, who took 15 paracetamol tablets of 750 mg, with suicidal ideation. The patient was seen at a Health Unit in the city of Rio Grande (RS), later transferred to the pediatric ICU of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Rio Grande, and later transferred and followed by the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, where she performed the transplant, had good graft acceptance and started using tacrolimus 10mg immunosuppressants orally twice a day, prednisone 5mg orally 2 tablets a day and Sulfametoxazol + Trimethoprim (400 + 80 mg) three times a week for maintenance. Emphasizes the importance of early intervention, awareness of rational drug use, and the need for stricter regulations on over-the-counter medication access.
