Abstract
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of PPI use, household storage and the profile of users. Method: Household survey, with cross-sectional and observational design. A total of 286 individuals over 18 years of age were interviewed in 112 households in the city of Natal-RN between September 2016 and June 2017. It was investigated the storage of PPIs at home and their use pattern. Data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics (Stata for Windows, version 11). Results: Gastrointestinal disorders (GID) are present in 11.5%, with an average of 2.7 ± 1.7 medications per individual, 69.9% using at least one drug, and the most prescribed ones were anti-inflammatory drugs (18.6%), followed by antihypertensive drugs (17.6%). The PPIs were used by 10.5% of the interviewees and found in 26.8% of the households, with the prevailing of omeprazole (93%). The use of PPI in the last 7 days was verified in 93.3% of the users of these drugs, and the average use in years was 2.9 ± 2.6. Conclusion: The prevalence of PPIs and their home storage were significant, as well as the prolonged use of these drugs.
