Abstract
Population aging is a reality in most countries, including Brazil. Added to this reality finds the practice of polypharmacy. Method: Descriptive and quantitative cross-sectional study with data collection done through interviews based on a questionnaire about the use of medicines. Results: The elderly people, mostly female, were taking 3.25 medications on average. The most commonly prescribed drugs were that acting on cardiovascular system (32.2%), especially hydrochlorothiazide (8.9%), captopril (5.0%), and enalapril (4.6%). More than half of respondents declared to practice self-medication, especially to relieve pain (90.7%). Most of them had never sought pharmaceutical guidance and don’t know the effects of medication. Conclusion: Polypharmacy is very frequent among elderly people and self-medication and incorrect prescriptions can exacerbate this problem. The role of the pharmacist is extremely important because it is the appropriate professional to advise on drug use, can produce satisfactory results.
